Safeguarding the Spirit of Bharat: The Legacy of RSS During Maha Kumbh

This event closely aligns with the mission of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS): uniting people from diverse backgrounds through a common civilizational heritage.

The words famously linked to Carl Jung, the esteemed Swiss psychiatrist, "The world will ask you who you are, and if you don’t know, the world will tell you," deeply resonate with the enduring spirit of Bharat and its devoted guardian, the RSS. For nearly a century, the Sangh has been steadfast in nurturing the cultural essence of India, weaving a national tapestry that embraces unity amid vast diversity. Despite this, its legacy is often defined by external narratives rather than its true spirit, leading to a skewed portrayal of this patriotic organization.

The Maha Kumbh Mela of 2025, set in Prayagraj, symbolizes more than a spiritual gathering; it represents Bharat’s timeless identity and unity. As the world’s largest spiritual congregation, this event parallels the RSS’ purpose of fostering a shared cultural foundation. Despite facing persistent misinterpretations and ideological hostility, the Sangh has remained a symbol of strength, perseverance, and hope in an increasingly fragmented society.

MISUNDERSTOOD YET RESOLUTE

Few organizations have withstood criticism with the poise and resilience of the RSS. Over the decades, it has been unfairly labeled as divisive and regressive—misconceptions rooted in political ideologies rather than reality. Influenced by leftist discourse and a state system wary of cultural consolidation, these critiques overlook the Sangh’s relentless work in building social unity beyond caste, class, or religion.

Mohan Bhagwat, the current Sarsanghchalak, affirmed in 2022, “The caste system has no relevance now. Everything that causes discrimination should go out lock, stock, and barrel.” His statement reflects decades of Sangh-driven initiatives promoting social equity—from uplifting marginalized groups to supporting inter-caste marriages. Its pursuit of Samajik Samarasata (social harmony) highlights Hindutva not as exclusionary, but as an inclusive cultural philosophy rooted in the ethos of Bharat.

During the Emergency, despite a government ban and leadership imprisonment, the RSS chose service and dialogue over retaliation. Balasaheb Deoras urged members to overcome hostility through acts of nation-building. His 1977 address noted, "Credit for the victory is given to the RSS, but it is our duty to be magnanimous and change hearts, even of those who opposed us." This spirit of quiet determination has always defined the Sangh’s character, embodying dignity and resolve amid adversity.

CULTURAL PATRIOTISM AND NATIONHOOD

The core of the RSS’ ideology lies in cultural nationalism, viewing Bharat as a civilizational entity far beyond the constructs of colonial-era nationhood. This patriotism finds expression not in grand displays but in daily acts—whether aiding disaster victims in Assam or preserving folk art in Tamil Nadu.

Through grassroots efforts, the RSS exemplifies “humanitarian patriotism.” Its volunteers are often first responders during crises, as seen in the Uttarakhand floods and Gujarat earthquake, embodying seva (selfless service) as an act of devotion.

Furthermore, the RSS strives to maintain Bharat’s cultural diversity in a rapidly homogenizing world by fostering regional languages, arts, and traditions. Its vision safeguards the nation’s pluralistic fabric while promoting unity in diversity.

MAHA KUMBH 2025: A SYMBOL OF UNITY

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj represents not only religious fervor but the civilizational grandeur of Bharat. The sacred confluence at Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati converge, reflects a deeper spiritual union—an affirmation of shared values and cultural harmony.

This gathering, with its saintly processions and cultural events, mirrors the Sangh’s vision of unity without uniformity. The rivers at Prayagraj flow together while retaining their unique identities, much like Bharat itself, a mosaic of diverse traditions thriving in harmony.

In a fractured global landscape, the symbolism of the Kumbh offers a powerful message. The participation of international pilgrims highlights Bharat’s universal spiritual heritage, embodying coexistence and shared wisdom.

REAFFIRMING BHARAT’S CIVILIZATIONAL ESSENCE

The RSS sees Bharat not as a mere political entity but as a civilizational state. As General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale articulated, "Nation is a cultural concept. Bharat is already a Hindu Rashtra," signifying inclusivity rooted in shared civilizational values transcending religion, region, and language.

This vision aligns with Swami Vivekananda’s belief in India’s spiritual leadership for the world. Through initiatives like Ekal Vidyalayas and sustainable practices based on ancient wisdom, the RSS nurtures this role. The centennial celebration of the RSS, coinciding with the Maha Kumbh, commemorates this enduring legacy of unity and service.

A CIVILIZATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

As the Maha Kumbh unfolds, it reflects Bharat’s timeless ethos of unity amid diversity. The RSS, with its century of service, remains a custodian of this civilizational vision, demonstrating that true unity arises from connection, not conformity. By emphasizing cultural patriotism, inclusive nationalism, and seva, the Sangh offers a hopeful path forward, not only for Bharat but for the world. The sacred waters of Prayagraj embody Bharat’s eternal spirit—ancient, diverse, and resilient. Through the RSS’ legacy of service, Jung’s words find new meaning: Bharat knows its true identity, and, guided by the Sangh’s efforts, so does the world.
